What is SOMA?
SOMA Bodywork is a system of physical manipulation of the muscular and connective tissue.  The body is a plastic medium and is
affected by physical and psychological trauma.  Long forgotten injuries can cause chronic pain to the body and mind.  Through
bodywork, these experiences can be corrected so that the person can function in gravity with ease and comfort.
SOMA changes people physically and psychologically by structurally balancing the body so that gravity becomes a friend, not an
enemy.

Origins
Following six years of extensive research and development, SOMA Institute was begun by Bill M. Williams, Ph.D. and Ellen Gregory,
Ph.D. in 1978.  Dr. Williams' training with Dr. Ida Rolf and 15,000 hours of body work sessions, combined with Electromyographic
research by Dr. Gregory, led to the development of the SOMA techniques.  This makes SOMA the state of art in neuromuscular
integration training.

Benefits
SOMA reduces stress and tension through the 10 session process, exercise and relaxation techniques.  Unlike allopathic medicine
(which treats symptoms) and chiropractic techniques (which adjust the spine), SOMA addresses the muscular, connective tissue
and fascia to free the joints and allow the muscles to perform smoothly, SOMA does not treat symptoms as such, but works with
entire human system so that, through proper alignment, the structure is more disease resistant and functions more appropriately.
An erect posture that is able to work and play with ease increases the individual's sense of self worth, while a more attractive
appearance results in a happier attitude toward life.

Who can benefit from SOMA?
People with conditions such as chronic back pain, arthritis, asthma, scoliosis, headaches, etc., have found relief after undergoing
SOMA Bodywork.  Athletes and dancers benefit through improved flexibility, increased energy and few injuries. However, anyone can
benefit from SOMA bodywork.

How does it work?
SOMA Bodywork affects the muscles and fascia of the body.  This fascia, which covers the muscles like a smooth well oiled
sleeve, is usually fixed or "glued" through injury, trauma, age, and/or stress.  When this glueing occurs, the muscles are like an
engine that has not been oiled.
When the muscles cannot function properly, posture is poor, flexibility is lost and, frequently, chronic illness results.  If the structure
is not in line with gravity, slumping occurs, internal organs are not held in an optimum position for good health and people often feel
depressed, anxious and emotionally upset.

SOMA bodywork produces:
  • Increased Levels of Energy and Performance
  • Fewer Stress Related Symptoms
  • Greater Self Confidence
  • Improved Concentration
  • Increased Flexibility
  • Improved Health and Appearance
